Painting for adults

Participants in the Painting for adults course explore traditional painting techniques, develop creative and abstract thinking and analyse their own artistic achievements.

Beginners course

A painting is a plane on which an artist uses techniques and methods to transfer the three-dimensional world to a two-dimensional surface. To do so, the artist needs to master various spatial cues that allow them to represent the depicted world or subject in a convincing manner. Workshop participants learn traditional painting techniques, develop creative and abstract thinking and analyse the results of their work.

Painting, with its diverse means of expression, takes participants from the basics of drawing and composition design to abstract colourful artistic creations. The course covers a broad range of topics, from the basics of drawing, sighting and the principles of composition on a pictorial surface, to theoretical understanding of the rules of colour composition. Alongside a theoretical introduction to artistic design, part of the programme focuses on learning about various painting techniques. These include painting with acrylics, egg tempera preparation, watercolour, and gouache. The course also includes an introduction to the preparation of surfaces, including panel painting, painting on paper and painting on canvas.

The workshop places particular emphasis on observing the world we live in and transferring it into an artistic work. Painting at Pionirski dom represents an exploration of a broad field of artistic expression, where knowledge and experience are built on through experimentation, either with a paintbrush or with other materials.

The beginners course is based on drawing and simple geometric bodies. From a basic shape such as a cube, participants gradually build chairs, tables and other frequently depicted objects from the history of art. They continue with the construction of ellipses, then add fabrics and conclude the course with a still life study.

Advanced course

Painting is probably one of the first creative fields we associate with the idea of art. In the advanced painting course at Pionirski dom, the painting as a “window on the world” also includes the study of references from art history. Participants learn about realism, impressionism and expressionism. All stylistic variations are supported by brief lectures and visual material from the rich history of art, right up to contemporary artistic practices.

Still lifes are enhanced by incorporating more complex forms such as floral arrangements and gradually develop into drawing and painting portraits and even nudes. The advanced painting course builds on the solid foundations of the beginners course by incorporating new materials and methods. The formal exploration of painting is complemented by further theoretical study, which helps participants not only when creating their own works but also when analysing works in terms of their form and content. Participants learn how to transfer stories and ideas to the pictorial surface.

The programme of the advanced course is based on drawing, to which colour is gradually added. The development of personal perception and expression in the visual arts is encouraged throughout the course and is something that participants can also apply when observing, understanding and interpreting artworks in institutional settings.
